![]() Having this increased depth of field is, is also very much dependent upon the distance that I am from my subject, and the background is away from the subject. ![]() It just depends on the particular situation. It is something that I think I can work with. In the case of this increased depth of fields that you get with a micro four third system, it is definitely something that I’m concerned about. Mark: So as photographers, we always make compromises when we’re out shooting. Make of them what you will but as Janine says, as wildlife photographers, we’re story tellers and for that, it’s about getting the image and not worrying so much about the noise! Both are shot on ISO 6,400 which is a typical threshold for many wildlife photographers, and you can see a difference between the two images. Yes, I would like to minimize it, but also the real truth is, the technology inside the camera has gotten better and the noise levels are coming down and being much more acceptable to the point where even shooting at ISO 6,400 or higher is just not objectionable to me.Īdditionally, in the last couple of years, software that reduces noise in your processing in your post-production work has become really good.Īn example: Below are two images shot with Mark’s OM-1 and Janine’s Canon R3. And so that’s something you just have to be willing to accept when you decide you might want to shoot with a micro four third system. Having smaller pixels is going to essentially increase the noise in your images, especially at higher ISOs. Is it possible to reach these shutter speeds? What does the ISO do on a micro four third sensor and is it really a problem? On a smaller sensor of a micro four third system, all our pixels get a little bit squished together and have to become smaller so that they can fit, that causes a different treatment of the light. Capturing movement is our number one priority, and at the same time, we often operate in very low light. Janine: We can all agree that in wildlife photography we require rather fast shutter speeds for a variety of reasons. Mark: Having extra reach is critical! Not only is it important to give our subject more space and make sure we don’t affect their behaviour but also having more focal length is (for most of the time) the best option. Janine: And how great is it to have that extra focal range a wildlife photographer needs? But for handholding, all day, like many wildlife photographers do I think the micro four third system is truly much more compact. Full-frame lenses can be handheld for short periods of time. There have been some pretty significant advances making full frame gear a little bit lighter but also balancing the lens a little bit better with the camera body. The image stabilization is fantastic, and being able to just change angles slightly without having to move a tripod and just being able to handhold in the field is so essential to a wildlife photographer. The smaller size sensor allows for a smaller camera body, but it also allows for much smaller lenses to be placed on the camera body. Mark: The biggest advantage of a micro four third system like Olympus is its portability. So in the field, how important does that become for a wildlife photographer? Janine: The smaller size sensor doesn’t just allow for a smaller camera body, but as mentioned before, gives you a two times crop and therefore a lot more focal range. I’m going to play devil’s advocate on this one and want to dive a little bit deeper into the advantages and disadvantages that these micro four third sensors bring along with them. ![]() ○ Canon EF 600mm f/4 to Olympus ED 300mm f/4 Olympus offered me the chance to try out their equipment for three months, and the short story is within one month I sent the equipment back and replaced all of my Canon gear with the equivalent of Olympus gear. The biggest change for me was due to the fact that mirrorless was definitely going to be the future.Īnd in 2015 when it came to mirrorless cameras Olympus was ahead of the curve with their autofocus ability, whereas Cannon, in my opinion, was lagging behind with autofocus on their mirrorless cameras. ![]() Mark: I shot Canon for 17 years and then 3 years ago I did switch to the micro 4/3 camera system of Olympus, which is now known as OM System. So what does this mean for wildlife photography? Mark, you’ve been shooting Canon for the previous 17 years which honestly shows a lot of brand loyalty so why the change to OM System (Olympus)? That is fantastic, but it also affects the way the light is being processed on that sensor. So we have a two-times crop at our hands and we can get double as far with our focal length. ![]()

There are obvious parallels to Ableton's system-wide timestretching/syncing capabilities here, but Native Instruments doesn't seem to be playing catch-up here. While beginner DJs will want to stick to full songs to get their bearings, more experienced users will find that with a good amount of dedication to selecting, laying out, and learning sample banks, their mixes will become significantly more involved, and a lot more fun to work with. This box forces the DJ to give samples more attention before the action starts and while the performance is happening. In the past, working with samples felt like something of an afterthought, or a gimmick (see the perennial "airhorn" or "nuclear bomb drop" sounds for reference). Our all-too-scarce minutes with the Traktor Kontrol F1 weren't enough to get any significant production work going, but we did manage to get a feel for what might be possible when it tags along with our existing Traktor setup. Traktor 2.5 software, now with Remix Decks The grid also serves as a 16-pixel animation display, so you're constantly treated to a deeper look at how the interface is triggering or navigating through each individual sound. Those candy-colored lights - each hue customizable via an embedded LED - communicate which type of sample is loaded in the corresponding slot in software. ![]() A single Traktor-standard rotary encoder is used to adjust parameters. Above each column sits a slider generally used for column volume control and a filter knob. These also serve secondary functions in shift-mode (pitch, speed and color) to further shape the sound. Surrounding the grid are a host of operational effects that modify playback of sounds in the corresponding rows, or in other cases, of all the sounds currently playing back in a column: sync, quant, capture, stop, type and size. Putting it simply, the F1 is a 4.7-by-11.5-inch box with a standard 16-pad interface that should be familiar to anyone who's encountered an MPC-style interface. We had an exclusive sit-down with a beta version of the adorable blinky-buttony-slidery controller/instrument-thing that we're itching to spill the beans on, so join us after the break, won't you? New Remix Decks in the accompanying Traktor 2.5 software cater to a more granular perspective on mixing, and the F1 is the tool that brings the new layers to your fingertips. The rainbow-flavored box aims squarely at the growing number of beat junkies who fall somewhere between DJ and producer. It does not store any personal data.A very colorful light will shine upon Native Instruments' DJ ecosystem on May 30th, and it's called Traktor Kontrol F1. Based on these characteristics, four parenting styles have been identified: 1. It may buffer against the negative outcomes of cyberbullying, promoting resilience. Warm and caring relationships between parents and children balanced with rules and monitoring directly protect against cyberbullying victimization and perpetration. PARENT-CHILD CONNECTEDNESS AND FIRMNESS AS PROTECTION AGAINST CYBERBULLYING We also emphasize the ways that online contexts may be similar and different to parenting in face-to-face contexts. In this chapter, we present the current knowledge of parenting strategies that are associated with low cyberbullying, highlighting available longitudinal research. Additionally, the majority of cyberbullying preventative interventions have been in European countries, with only a few scattered studies in the US, Middle East, and Australia. ,, A large majority of these programs have been implemented in schools and few have included parent support in their programming. We know from research across several countries that cyberbullying prevention programs are effective. Notably, the majority of these studies were cross-sectional, which underscores the emerging nature of this research.īecause 70% of cyberbullying occurs at home and parents have expressed a need for digital safety information, clear guidance and preventative programming is needed for parents. , This hypothesis needs further examination, particularly in Eastern cultures. Other research has found mixed results regarding parental monitoring in online contexts, suggesting that restrictive monitoring may not be the most effective. Parental monitoring may be less salient than warmth and connectedness. In a review of the literature, Elsaesser and colleagues found that most studies of parenting and cyberbullying suggested that parent-child relationships were negatively related to cyberbullying perpetration and victimization. Supportive parent-child relationships protect against cyberbullying and enhance resilience of children who encounter high-risk environments. Parents are a critical protective factor for reducing cyberbullying risk at the relational level of the ecological system. Unsure of how to successfully monitor online behavior, many parents worry about the effects of cyberbullying on their children. , However, parents report feeling overwhelmed by technology when it comes to online risks. ,, , Parental monitoring reduces youth substance use, delinquent behaviors, sexual risk behaviors, and bullying in all its forms. ![]() Across Western and Eastern cultures, parent supportiveness and communication are associated with academic success, empathy, and pro-social behaviors. This chapter examines the available literature on the importance of parents to protect their children against cyberbullying. Extensive research on effective interventions and media parenting strategies across diverse contexts are much needed. Further, given the novel nature of this research area and the fast-paced evolution of technology, longitudinal research on parenting and cyberbullying is lacking. ![]() However, some differences in parenting across Western and Eastern cultures may influence approaches to media parenting. As such, parents are heavily in need of guidance and reassurance on how to best maintain their children’s safety online and prevent cyberbullying.
